Strider 20K

I hadn’t run a race since the Trailbreaker Marathon on April 1st. Also, I haven’t done any formal speedwork this year and really had no idea what sort of shape i was in. I warmed up with 2 miles at 8 minute pace. Temps/Humidity were great considering it’s Labor Day Weekend.

At the starting line I saw Double, Kooch, Kirby and Peace467. The race started and I ran the first half mile with Roy pIrRUNg and chatted with him about the 50K he ran last weekend. The first mile went by in about 6:38 or so. We did a 2nd loop in Estabrook park and at about 4.5 we headed down the bike trail. Double and Kirby were about 200 meters ahead of me. The bike trail had a elevation drop of about 140 feet in about 4 miles. It’s pretty much downhill all the way to 8 miles, do a 180 and then you’re climbing back up to where you came from. On the way back I did slow a bit. Double and Kirby seemed to pick it up a notch. I passed 10M in 1:06 and something. By the time I made it back up to the park there was about a mile left to the finish. Admittedly, I was on fumes. Peace467 eased up next to me with about a quarter mile to go and we finished together.

28th overall
7th M30-34
1:23:58
6:46 pace

I ended up cooling down for a mile with Double and Kirby then having a quick Sprecher Root Beer before heading home. My PR is 1:22:49 at this race back in 1996. (Yes, 10 years ago) Being only 70 seconds off that effort was a bit of a surprise. ":-)"

Next up…
