ease back

this morning i ran an easy 5 miles in 41 minutes. the last song i heard on my mp3 player was "Art of Life" by Queensryche. lyrically speaking…it’s significant at this point in my preparation for BOSTON…

When I asked him,
he described a thousand lifetimes.
At each turn, a hint of what one still must learn.
Now I’ve read the thoughts of philosophers,
the words of liars, who say that underneath I’m worthless.
Incomplete?

Some one said we live our lives in between the extremes.
Is the art of life discipline?
Is that the sweet mystery?

The art of life is …
without rushing, without faltering we push it as far as we can.
Observe with patience.
Free your mind.
Efficiency, control.
To develop the form starts with acceptance, then submission to the goal.

Some one said somewhere we live our lives in between the extremes.
Is the art of life discipline?
Is that the sweetest mystery?

The art of life is …
without rushing, without faltering, unraveling the secrets of knowledge.
We must challenge and defeat our four natural enemies;
Fear.
Clarity of mind.
Power and the desire to rest.

add another 7

this morning i headed down madison and met up with Double for a run around town. with temps in the mid 40s (and light rain) i opted for a jacket and long pants. Double (the Legend) shows up in shorts and a sleeveless vest. we headed down madison and ran through bethesda park before getting on the glacial drumlin trail and heading back to my subdivision. overall, i ran 8:15 pace for 7 miles which isn’t too bad for first thing in the AM. i’m planning on an easy 5 miles tomorrow and then take friday off from running to be semi-rested for the Trailbreaker 13.1 on saturday.

still in the sixties

wow…another morning of shorts and a t-shirt. i ran down to bethesda park and back in under 58 minutes. (7 miles at ~8:20 pace) this morning’s miles put me a few miles past my prior best for monthly miles in March (213). i’ll likely take a day off before Trailbreaker but i should still finish the month with lots of miles in the bank.

last night i received mail from the BAA with the details on the marathon. i’ve got to get on a bus to the start at 6AM ET. good thing i’m used to being up at 4:30AM CT to run!

warm up wisconsin

by sunday afternoon i was ready to get out and put in a few more miles. temps were up into the mid 60’s with sunny skies and a strong SW wind. i headed out (very slowly at first) and mustered 6 miles at 8:50 pace. getting in some efforts with it warm & sunny is a good idea because you never know what you’ll get when you’re running BOSTON.

monday morning i headed out with starry skies and temps in the low 60’s. it’s been a long time since i’ve been able to wear shorts and a short sleeve shirt in the morning…comfortably. i ended up with a little over 7 miles in just under 60 minutes. i’m still moving slow from saturday’s effort.

at this point, i’m about 50 miles away from 25,000 on the odometer.

“…and you’re spent” – Austin Powers

i got myself going late into the morning and headed out for my last long run in preparation for the 2007 BOSTON marathon. temps were in the mid 50’s and i wore a long sleeve compression shirt and shorts…both black in color. the first section of the long run, i purposely chose as it starts off on a decline for the first three miles then stays mainly flat to rolling for terrain. at 4.5 miles i stopped at a park and the restrooms were closed and the water fountain was turned off. thankfully i carried a water bottle with me.

at 6 miles i stopped at another park, same deal. at 7 miles i stopped at a county park and thankfully a bathroom was open. after 7.5 miles, i turned back the way i came and headed back to casa cameron. i was noticing alot of sweat off my cap and salt showing up on my shirt. at 12 miles i took my first gel and headed up the big hill on the glacial drumlin trail. i pulled into my house at 15 miles to refill my water bottle and put on a tank top shirt as i was overheated.

the last 5 miles, i purposefully chose as well. there’s two/three solid hills that really tax your legs especially after putting in a 15 mile warm up. (just like BOSTON) just before leaving my house, i downed my second gel and headed out. it felt much easier to run with a lighter shirt on. at 17.5 miles, i used my third and final gel. i ended up rolling in at 8:19 pace for 20 miles for a total time of 2:46:20. i walked a little around the court and headed straight for my fridge in the garage for a heineken. i felt as though i owed it to myself.
